Antique Floral Vinaigrette Locket | Ruby Locket

Pierced vinaigrette jewelry was a fashionable way of overcoming the unpleasant odors associated with city life in the 18th and 19th centuries. Vinaigrettes were made of a variety of materials and fashioned into many forms -- bracelets, rings, necklaces, and chatelaine items. They held tiny sponges containing a mixture of vinegar and herbs/spices or sweet smelling perfumes and oils. Women wore vinaigrettes and held them under their noses when the odors of the day became too much to bear.

This elegant 15ct gold floral vinaigrette locket (circa 1870-1890) features a floral design accented with tiny rubies. The locket opens and closes securely and would be a wonderful way to carry some aromatherapy oils or a tiny cloth scented with your favorite perfume.

The locket measures 1.2 inches from top of the jump ring bail to the bottom of the piece by 0.7 inches wide. It is in excellent condition.

Materials: Ruby, Gold.
