Snakes, which shed their skin, have long associations with transformation, immortality, and healing.
This antique snake pendant dates to the mid-late Victorian era (circa 1860-1880). The coiled serpent is base metal with a silver overlay. The snake has a hand etched face with garnet eyes, a paste accent atop its head, and a freshwater pearl dangling from its mouth.
The 15 inch sterling silver chain and the silver bail are not original to the piece.
The pendant measures 1.6 inches from top to bottom by 0.6 inches wide. It is in good condition; however the base metal shows through the silver overlay in several locations.
Materials: Garnet, Silver.
