Description

The Arts & Crafts movement of the late 19th and early 20th centuries was an attempt to reintroduce artistry and craftsmanship into manufacturing. It was, in essence, a backlash against industrialization and the perceived monotony of overly ornamental, machine made products.
Arts and Crafts jewelry typically featured stylized naturalistic themes and was usually crafted of affordable metals and semi-precious stones or enamel instead of precious gemstones and gold.
This Arts and Crafts necklace (circa 1910-1930) is a lovely example of the type of jewelry produced by this movement. This necklace features a cast pendant with a stylized leaf design surrounding a bezel set cabochon lapis lazuli stone. The chain is 16 inches long and the pendant measures 2.4 inches tall by 1.1 inches wide. The reverse of the pendant is marked 800 (800/1000 parts silver) and bears an unidentified maker's mark which appears to be "MGM" inside of a cartouche.
