Antique Carved Emerald Cameo Ring of 14k Gold

A remarkable antique ring dating to approximately 1880, centered with a finely hand-carved emerald cameo depicting a classical female bust, possibly Athena (Minerva), the ancient goddess of wisdom, strategy, and courage. The intricate carving demonstrates the exceptional skill required to work such a hard and valuable gemstone, making this piece a noteworthy example of glyptic artistry. The richly included emerald provides a dramatic and luminous medium for the carving, while the 14-karat gold mounting offers a warm contrast that enhances the depth and detail of the cameo. We believe the cameo may predate the mounting, although this cannot be confirmed with certainty.

The ring's face measures approximately 0.6 inches in diameter and rises 0.4 inches from the finger, creating a bold, sculptural presence. The ring weighs 4.75 grams and is offered in very good antique condition, with the carving well preserved and securely set. Currently a size 7.75, it may be professionally resized for an additional charge.

As is typical of many natural emeralds, the stone is heavily included, lending the cameo a distinctive character and depth.

Gemstone identification has been confirmed through Raman spectroscopy, a non-destructive analytical technique that provides a precise chemical fingerprint for authentication. Metal content has been professionally verified using both X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analysis and traditional jeweler's acid testing, confirming solid 14-karat gold construction.
