Antique Enamel Cherub Pendant of 14k & 18k Gold

A captivating antique pendant dating to the late Victorian era (circa 1890–1900), featuring a finely painted enamel portrait of a cherub or cupid. The figure is depicted with a quiver of arrows at its side and holding a single arrow, the tip raised thoughtfully to its lips—an evocative and symbolic pose associated with love’s secrecy and playful intent. The portrait is set within a delicate halo of pearls and mounted in an 18k gold front with a 14k gold back.

Cherub and cupid imagery was especially popular in late Victorian jewelry, symbolizing love, innocence, and romantic sentiment, often with a touch of theatrical whimsy. The intimate gesture of the arrow held to the lips adds a sense of mystery and quiet charm, enhancing the emotional depth of the composition.

The enamel work is beautifully executed, with soft coloration and expressive detail that bring the cherub’s features and attributes vividly to life. The surrounding pearls provide gentle luminosity and elegant contrast, framing the portrait and enriching its romantic character. The pendant measures approximately 1.2 inches from the top of the bail to the bottom and 1 inch wide, and weighs 4.34 grams—offering a balanced, wearable presence suitable for both display and everyday elegance.

The gold content has been professionally verified using XRF (X-ray fluorescence) analysis and confirmed with traditional jeweler’s acid testing, authenticating the 18k front and 14k back. The pendant remains in great antique condition; however, the original backing was replaced at some point in the past with a 14k gold back. The join was completed using soft solder, which is visible only under magnification.
