Georgian Garnet and Enamel Memento Mori Ring of 10k Gold

A deeply evocative antique ring dating to the late Georgian era (circa 1810–1830), centered with a rich garnet framed by a striking white and black enamel border, all mounted in 10k gold. Rings of this type often conveyed themes of remembrance, mortality, and moral reflection, drawing on the long tradition of memento mori jewelry. The garnet’s raspberry hue—long associated with love, sacrifice, and constancy—pairs powerfully with the stark enamel contrast, lending the ring both emotional gravity and visual distinction.

The interior of the band is inscribed “Memento Mori Catharine Parr,” an exceptionally rare and thought-provoking detail. Rather than indicating a conventional mourning ring, the inscription may reference Queen Catherine Parr, the sixth wife of Henry VIII, whose legacy as a learned, devout, and resilient historical figure remained influential well into the Georgian period. In this context, the inscription likely serves as a moral or philosophical tribute—invoking remembrance, impermanence, and virtuous legacy—rather than the loss of a contemporary loved one.

Such historically referential inscriptions are highly uncommon and significantly enhance the ring’s intellectual, cultural, and collectible significance.

The ring is a size 6.5 and can be re-sized for an additional fee.
