Antique Shakudo Quail Bird Pendant of 14k Gold

An exquisite antique shakudo plaque, depicting two quails in a moonlit flower garden, dating to 1890. The richly patinated shakudo—an alloy prized in Japanese metalwork—creates a dramatic dark ground, allowing the finely detailed scene to emerge with remarkable depth and subtle tonal contrast. The tranquil composition reflects the refined artistry and naturalistic themes associated with late 19th-century Japanese design.

The plaque has been thoughtfully mounted in a 14 karat gold setting with a gold bail, a later addition that allows the piece to be worn as a pendant while preserving the integrity of the original work.

The pendant measures 1.6 inches from the top of the bail to the bottom and 1.25 inches wide, with a substantial weight of 18.14 grams, offering impressive presence when worn. It is presented in great antique condition, with details crisp and surfaces well preserved.

Metal authenticity has been professionally verified using XRF (X-ray fluorescence) analysis and traditional jeweler’s acid testing, confirming 14K gold components.
