An extraordinary pair of earrings created from very rare buttons dating to the time of the French Revolution (1789-1799).
The earrings are hand painted enamel. One bears a person stepping on a crown with a bat and squeezing a heart in his hand. It reads "Jeterasse les aristocracies" in French which translates to: "Throw Out the Aristocrats." The other shows an old man in a field carrying two swords on his back. It reads "Je suis las de les porter" in French which translates to: "Fed up with Carrying Them."
These earrings originally a pair of antique buttons turned cufflinks that our jeweler transformed by adding 14k gold backs and ear wires with natural blue sapphire surmounts.
Each earring measures 1.7 inches from the top of the ear wire to bottom by 1.2 inches wide, and they have a combined weight of 20.89 grams. The earrings are in very good condition for their age with light surface wear.
