This Georgian patch box (circa 1780) features pink and white enamel on base metal. The top of the box depicts a cloth draped alter that reads "A Friends Gift."
The piece measures 1.4 inches by 1.65 inches wide and 1 inch tall. The box is in fair condition for its age with some wear and cracks to the enamel and some corrosion on the mirrored lid. It opens and closes securely.
During the 18th century, patch boxes were common love tokens. The tiny porcelain boxes often expressed beautiful sentiments on the outside, while the inside held patches of gummed taffeta, used to cover blemishes or to decorate one's skin.
Materials: Metal, Enamel.
Collections: Archive, Patch Boxes
