Antique Enamel Coach Cover and Diamond Earrings of 18k and 15k Gold

This elegant pair of antique earrings, dating to the Victorian "Grand Period" of 1870-1880, represents a sophisticated marriage of 19th-century aesthetics and ingenious engineering. Accompanied by antique coach covers of the same era, this pair of earrings offers a window into the strict social etiquette of Victorian ladies, where jewelry was governed by the time of day. During this period, wearing brilliant diamonds before sunset was considered a social faux pas; coach covers—also known as "protective" covers—were designed to snap over the stones to provide a more modest, "sober" appearance for morning calls or travel. Beyond fashion, they served the practical purpose of shielding precious gems from the soot of 19th-century transit and concealing wealth from the eyes of highwaymen during carriage rides.

The core of the earrings features graceful dangles set with old European cut diamonds in 18 karat gold. These hand-faceted stones possess the deep pavilions and soft, romantic brilliance characteristic of antique cuts, designed to shimmer specifically under the warm glow of candlelight. The principal diamonds weigh 0.56 carats (F–G color, SI1 clarity) and 0.52 carats (G–H color, VS–SI1 clarity), providing a beautifully matched and balanced appearance. The coach covers are crafted in 15 karat gold accented with rich black enamel, allowing the pieces to be worn as dramatic, dark-framed drops or as shorter, high-brilliance dangles.

Each earring measures 1 inch from the top of the ear wire to the bottom with the coach cover attached, and 0.7 inches without the cover, offering exceptional versatility for the modern collector. The pair has a combined weight of 8.45 grams with the covers and 2.8 grams without. They are presented in good antique condition with the stones secure and the delicate enamel well preserved, though one cover did have a chip to the enamel that was professionally restored using a cold enamel technique.

To ensure absolute peace of mind regarding authenticity, the gemstones have been confirmed using Raman spectroscopy, a non-destructive analytical technique that provides a precise chemical fingerprint. The metal authenticity has been professionally verified using XRF (X-ray fluorescence) analysis and traditional jeweler’s acid testing, confirming the 18K and 15ct gold construction.
