This remarkable giardinetti or “little garden” pendant (circa 1820–1850) exemplifies the exquisite craftsmanship of the Georgian to early Victorian era. The jewel depicts an urn overflowing with flowers, a beloved motif symbolizing abundance and renewal, adorned with an array of colorful gemstones.
Originally conceived as an antique silver brooch, the piece has been thoughtfully transformed into a pendant with the addition of a 14k gold bail. The floral design sparkles with rose cut diamonds, a teardrop-shaped pink tourmaline, a high-domed natural sapphire, and smaller green and pink glass accents. Over the centuries, some elements have been subtly renewed: one pink glass cabochon has been replaced with a tiny ruby, and one green glass stone with an emerald. The sapphire also bears a minute chip on the side, visible only under magnification.
Measuring 1.6 inches from top to bottom by 0.85 inches across, the pendant is offered in great condition, with its historical integrity and beauty intact. A rare and romantic jewel, it captures the charm and symbolism of early 19th-century garden-inspired design.
(The photographed chain is no longer available and is not included with the pendant.)
Materials: diamond, 14k gold, silver, sapphire, pink tourmaline, glass.
