Antique Pearl and Chlorastrolite Ring of 18k Gold

A distinctive antique ring featuring a striking chlorastrolite, also known as Isle Royale “greenstone,” center stone accented by five lustrous pearls, set in rich 18K gold. The elongated ring face dates to circa 1900, while the band is a later addition dating to circa 1930. Together, these elements create a compelling piece that reflects the refined elegance of early twentieth-century jewelry.

The mossy green hue and distinctive natural patterning of the chlorastrolite are beautifully complemented by the soft iridescence of the surrounding pearls. The warm gold setting enhances the contrast between the deep green stone and the delicate pearl accents, giving the ring a distinctive presence that balances bold color with understated elegance.

Chlorastrolite is a rare variety of pumpellyite associated with Michigan’s Lake Superior region, where it became a prized material for jewelry and mineral collectors in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Nicknamed “turtleback” for its characteristic mosaic-like pattern, it was designated Michigan’s official state gemstone in 1972.

The ring face measures approximately 0.9 inches long by 0.4 inches wide. The ring weighs 5.12 grams and is currently a size 8; marginal resizing may be available for an additional charge. It remains in great vintage condition.

Material verification: The 18K gold content was verified through X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analysis and traditional jeweler’s acid testing. Raman spectroscopy was also performed on the center stone to assist in confirming its identity as chlorastrolite, or Isle Royale “greenstone.”

With its distinctive greenstone centerpiece, five delicate pearl accents, and warm 18K gold setting, this ring is a compelling example of early twentieth-century jewelry, combining an unusual regional gemstone with the timeless appeal of pearls. The circa-1900 ring face and circa-1930 band give the piece a layered history and distinctive character.
