- Beauty is who you are. Jewelry is simply icing on the cake. - M.Burgess
The dog rose, with its soft pink hue, is a symbol of both pleasure and pain. The flower's association with pleasure dates back to medieval times when dog rose flowers were placed at the end of a maiden's bed to signify a king's interest in her company that evening. The pain associations come from the belief that the flower could be used to cure the bite of a mad dog.
This substantial 14k gold enamel dog rose brooch by the renowned A.J. Hedges & Co. of Newark, NJ, dates to the 1920s. The brooch is accented with vibrant pink and white enamel and holds a glistening diamond accent at its center. The piece can be worn as either a brooch or a pendant.
It measures 1.3 inches in diameter and is marked for 14k gold with the A.J. Hedges maker's mark on the reverse. The piece is in outstanding condition.
